Technology has been fundamental to transport ever since humans began to think beyond their feet, but recent rapid advances in information technology promise to transform transport management .

We need this transformation. In the European Union alone, 20 per cent of GDP is generated by the transport sector. This equates to 1,900 billion euros, 16 million jobs, or nine per cent of all EU employment. The decongestion of transport corridors is clearly an imperative. So how do we reduce congestion? It is about improving door to door journey times and taking much of the stress out of travel, as well as making those journeys safer. Critically by reducing congestion and making public transport more attractive it is about drastically reducing transport-generated pollution, encouraging conditions for sustainable economic growth.

A set of core technologies underpins these solutions.  They include distributed devices from mobile phones to embedded sensors/transmitters (in everything from engine management systems to freight pallets). They include wireless infrastructures (cellular and satellite) and intelligent network systems capable of integrating diverse information sources. Modern solutions also demand advanced ID recognition techniques linked to large-scale transaction processing and payment clearing systems.
