Real-time travel information

 

Real-time travel information enables travellers to make smarter choices about routes and transport modes.

Logica launched the first GSM based real-time journey estimation service in Europe in 2003, and we recently delivered a real-time bus monitoring and passenger information system for the major public transit authority in Paris. We have also worked with the Swedish Road Administration to design and implement a system for collection, quality assurance and distribution of real-time traffic information.

Building on our expertise in mobile devices, telecommunications and high volume data processing Logica work for clients on systems that can aggregate information from multiple sources; that are capable of taking status data from all transport networks, and turn that data into information in real-time in whatever form travellers can best use, whether to a mobile phone or PDA, or in less personalised form onto internet sites or variable message signs.

Personalisation matters: the real step forward is that the system goes beyond individual transport modes to help people manage their real journey. It is ‘traveller-centric’. Indeed, if a traveller is carrying a mobile communication device the available positioning data enables us to track their progress and send any important new advice proactively.

Logica has combined a public transport journey planner with real-time information to enhance information delivery for transit passengers.  For private car users, we have also integrated real-time traffic information together with internet map and routing services.

We have developed an architecture and road map to enable multi-mode sources of travel information to be integrated and to provide the wide range of distribution channels and services to support traveller-centric systems, as oppose to modal based systems.

With such knowledge travellers can adjust their plans, shifting the load from a congested part of a transport network to a less congested route or mode. The concept of automated ticketing can make this mode-switching easy and painless. All of this shows how a core technology expertise can solve multiple transport problems, and how Logica’s experience in the full range of those core technologies can create innovative transport solutions.
