Barron McCann Limited is a leading UK provider of IT services and products for the retail,
Government and industry sectors. For over thirty years, they have been leading the way in the
delivery of commercially compelling, service excellence across the operations of their expanding
customer base. Their customers include security-dependent organisations as diverse as major
retailers and the 2011 Census.
The Challenge
Handling highly confidential information about every single person in the whole of England, Wales
and Northern Ireland is no minor undertaking. As a market-leading provider, selected to deliver
crucial IT services to support the 2011 Census, Barron McCann had to prove that they have security that is in line with the highest possible standards. In order to do this they needed to gain compliance with the ISO/IEC 27001 information security management standard. This meant working on issues related to information security, ranging from the technical, physical, personnel and procedural to make them compliant with Information Security Management System (ISMS) standards.
Our Answer
We worked with Barron McCann to address technical, physical, personnel and procedural issues
related to information security. We focused on the management processes required to ensure that
security was addressed in a logical and comprehensive manner. Our open approach across all
stakeholders helped Barron McCann resolve issues in a timely and effective manner. Through this
approach, we enabled them to present a professional image to business partners and their supply
chain. A complete end-to-end service was carried out that included:
- initial business risk analysis
- threat and vulnerability assessments
- designing a security policy
- implementation assistance
- business continuity management and auditing.
A Success Story
In July 2011, Barron McCann was certified ISO/IEC 27001 compliant. This ISMS certification provides them with clear market differentiation and will assist them in securing additional Government and commercial work without having to prove, time after time, that their security is of the highest level. Being one of the first independent IT service provider in the UK to achieve this level of security certification, they now have a unique selling proposition. For competitors this can be difficult to prove, giving our client a clear marketing advantage. They can now ‘go live’ and handle sensitive personal information pertaining to a major project without any outstanding security issues. Looking forward, many clients can now expect security to be part of their ‘business as usual’.
