Commercialising EV Car Hire

The introduction of electric vehicles present an exciting new business opportunity for car hire companies. However the book is still being written for electric vehicle (EV) recharging infrastructure and the commercial business models that will eventually support it.

Across Europe Governments are beginning to invest in EV infrastructure. In the UK, the attractiveness for adoption by individuals and businesses alike is likely to be determined, at least in the near future, by the government’s present ‘Plugged in Places’ (PiP) schemes.

Many of the car manufacturers have announced the introduction of affordable electric cars and the infrastructure is currently being used by the first adopters including car hire companies in ad-hoc deployments. Understanding both the present EV infrastructure landscape and future horizon is an imperative for those wishing to invest.

Car hire companies looking to enter this new market need a clear understanding of how they will need to interact with the wider EV marketplace – essential when considering present and future commercial business models.

Mobilising your EV fleet
We have already assisted the Dutch Government and energy companies in establishing a national interoperable infrastructure for EVs in the Netherlands.

We are now working closely with the Government and the city regions to ensure that early commercialisation is achieved and flexible back-office systems are in place to support several, emerging commercial business models, including those of car hire companies.

We have a detailed understanding of city region and the UK Government objectives for transport and how EV recharging infrastructure providers and scheme owners – including car hire businesses – will need to cooperate in terms of:

  • real world implementation – providing uniformity in customer experience
  • technical standards – achieving interoperability with infrastructure owned by other scheme owners
  • commercial viability – enabling the adoption of multiple business models within a mixed infrastructure environment where individual financial payment and reimbursement is assured for all parties.

Our data brokerage service will give EV infrastructure providers and grid owners the ability to monitor the energy, storage and billing needs. This supports the maintenance and management of the combined energy and EV network so that demand is dynamically controlled and the grid is operated at minimum cost.

We want to work in partnership with governments, infrastructure providers and scheme owners to ensure that a commercially funded EV model is adopted across Europe.
