User Interface Vision
The user interface represents one of the most demanding challenges for the design of innovative solutions. Devices have become smaller and portable, and issues of miniaturisation and memory have been largely overcome. The size of the screen is reduced, and the display needs to be legible and must accommodate input, especially when the user is on the move.
The ‘User Interface Vision’ addresses the users, their tasks and the environment in which they operate. This way we learn how to advance effective input, interaction and the search, access, management and display of complex data to provide the users an intuitive, accurate and safe means of working.
How does the future look?
New input mechanisms are getting more dynamic by the day. Touch, gesture and voice represent opportunities to bring more humanised controls to our interaction and offer the potential for user
interface innovation. Let’s briefly discuss these opportunities.
Touch
From a usability point of view, a touch screen is more intuitive than a pointing device as the user
can select an item directly without having to drag a pointer. Touch screens merge the position of input and location of output. This enables a move from direct manipulation to direct interaction.
Gesture control
Gestures offer an intuitive means of interacting with the device. They are quickly gaining popularity
among users as they can quickly perform more complex functions without multiple steps when interacting with the same mainstream technologies.
The user experience concerns all aspects of how people use an interactive product; with the proliferation of touch-enabled phones, tablets, computers and displays and now the revolution in gesture-based user interfaces, these areas are in need of system interface solutions that provide cost savings, error-reduction, improved communication and integrated collaboration for the end users who will be interacting within these ecosystems.
Never has the technology been so pervasive and used by such a broad demographic, making this a very exciting time indeed.
