In civilian life, not getting the right information to the right people at the right time can be inconvenient, inefficient and may result in lost profits. In the military, poor information management could endanger people’s lives.

The MoD needs systems that can be depended on to work on operations, anywhere in the world, as well as the systems that run their multi-billion pound organisation.

The amount of data involved is vast and, in many spheres, extremely complicated. And, of course, everything needs to be secure – even the most innocuous e-mail or document could be useful to an enemy. Data must also be completely reliable. Military personnel need accurate pay and administrative systems as well as accurate firepower.

Over the years, military systems have grown in numbers and complexity. The challenge is to integrate them and make them interoperable, so that they continue to deliver the flexibility and speed of information demanded in modern military operations. Resilience and recoverability are a given – all the systems are, in one way or another, mission critical.
